This Audio Track = 1 Cup of Coffee

Your Brain on Sound

Most people would agree that music is intrinsic to a high quality of life. Some would also argue that same point for their daily cup of coffee, but what if you could get the same physiological effect from an audio track that you get from 1 cup of coffee? Would you dump your small contribution to Starbucks bottom line and go for a sonic cup of joe?

The natural internal rhythms of the brain (brainwaves), react to rhythmic stimulus like the beat of a drum. When the sounds you hear are consistent, steady and fast enough, your brain can synchronize its brainwaves to music and sound. This is called Entrainment and was first identified in 1934.

Stefanos Karagos of anabubula.com, a 16 year veteran of the Media industry, created an audio track entitled Coffee Replacement to provide himself with a sonic alternative to a caffeine energy boost.

Coffee Replacement is a fascinating audio track. I’ve listened to it several times and it definitely has an energizing effect on me. It makes me slightly anxious but I can’t say I don’t feel that way after too much coffee. In my experience on different days at different times, the last 5 minutes or so always have the greatest impact on my state of mind.

Working in the Sonic Branding space everyday, it’s amazing to see the connections that music and sound make with our minds and body that the general public and average marketer aren’t aware of. It’s exciting to dream about the positive applications and demonstrations that take advantage of this type of physiological response to sound and open all of our minds a bit. If you have an idea or a discovery in this arena, we want to hear about it. Until then, put on some headphones and enjoy a sonic cup of coffee.
